Working port on Lake Erie at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River, central Cleveland, Ohio.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Outer harbour formed by breakwaters running about 1 mile west and 4 miles east of the Cuyahoga River mouth. Main entrance is the dredged approach channel opposite the river. Secondary openings at the east end and a small craft opening at the west end. Anchorage bottom is mud and sand. Commercial vessels up to 550 feet may anchor in designated berthing areas 11 to 17.
Practical
Active commercial port with bulk cargo, lake freighters and ferry traffic. Recreational berths inside the inner harbour at North Coast Harbor Marina and at Lakeside Yacht Club to the east. No public anchoring inside the working harbour outside of marked areas.
History
The first sections of the Cleveland Breakwater were built in 1827. By 1892 the central breakwall was complete and the east leg was nearly finished, securing the harbour for the iron ore and coal trade that built industrial Cleveland.
