Anchorage near the mouth of the Alligator River on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, coastal North Carolina.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Anchor in the river clear of the AICW channel, on a mud bottom. The water is open and low-lying, with shelter from the west through south to south-east only and a long fetch in northerly weather. The Alligator River swing bridge carrying US 64 opens on signal on VHF channel 13 and closes when the wind exceeds 35 knots, so plan a passage to clear it.
Practical
Alligator River Marina lies 1.9 nm to the south-east, by the bridge, and is the only readily available fuel and dockage on this stretch of the AICW between Coinjock and Belhaven. Cypress Cove Marina is 11.3 nm to the west.
