Anchorage off the town of Belhaven, North Carolina, on Pantego Creek just off the Pungo River reach of the ICW.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Turn off the Pungo River into Pantego Creek. A refurbished breakwater stretches across most of the creek mouth and shelters the waterfront from the chop rolling in off the river. Anchor inside the breakwater on a sand bottom. The ground is sheltered from north-west through east but open to the south-east.
Practical
No facilities at the anchorage. Free docking is available at Cooperage Landing on Pantego Creek. Dowry Creek Marina lies about 2.8 miles west; Belhaven Marina is around 7 miles west.
Ashore
Belhaven town centre, a river town of about 1,600 residents, is within walking distance of the waterfront, with shops and provisions.
History
Belhaven is billed as the birthplace of the ICW: the cut linking it into the Norfolk to Beaufort route was the last link completed, opening the through waterway in 1928.
