River port of 320 berths on the Jaudy, 6 nautical miles upstream from its estuary, in Côtes-d'Armor, Brittany.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Estuary of the Jaudy entered between La Corne lighthouse and Pointe du Château. Well marked channel with lateral buoys and leading lights, but strong tidal streams on the ebb in the narrower stretches, so aim to arrive at slack, about 30 minutes either side of high or low water. A waiting pontoon lies in the river just off the marina to hold for the current or the tide. The berths themselves lie in a strong stream and staff come out to take lines. At night watch for unlit boats on mooring buoys in the river. Maximum draught 3 metres at the pontoons, harbour office on VHF 9.
Practical
Diesel fuel berth at the marina, water and electricity on the pontoons, though the water pressure runs low. The gangway down to the pontoons is steep and slippery at low water on the large tidal range. Sanitary block with showers and laundry, dated and cool at best. Berthing runs on the dear side, with a winter rate near 30 euros for a large monohull. Order bread and pastries the evening before through the office for delivery to the boat. Crane and boatyard. A Biocoop organic store shares the harbour office building and opens on Saturdays, with a Carrefour City, bakery, butcher and fishmonger within 400 metres, a Wednesday market on Place du Martray and a flea market on Thursdays.
Ashore
Cathédrale Saint-Tudwal dominates the old town 300 metres from the port, built between the 13th and 15th centuries, with a triforium and granite cloister, and creperies and cafes gather on Place du Martray. Maison natale d'Ernest Renan on the same square, now a museum. The Sentier des douaniers GR 34 runs from the port along the Jaudy towpath, and it is a good cycle ride downriver to the small port of La Roche-Jaune.
History
Tréguier is one of the seven founding bishoprics of Brittany, attributed to the Welsh monk Tudwal in the 6th century. The town is the birthplace of Ernest Renan, born in 1823, whose statue on Place du Martray sparked lasting controversy with the Church after it was unveiled in 1903.
