Marina of 560 berths inside the old naval harbour of Toulon, on the south coast of Provence.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Entry from the Petite Rade, well buoyed and lit night and day. Traffic shared with the French Navy and ferries to Corsica and the Iles d'Or, so listen on VHF 9 and keep clear of commercial movements. Ferries and small commercial craft set up a wash that reaches the berths. Max draught 8 m at the deepest berths. The basin is well sheltered from westerly gales, though the mistral blows hard from the NW through the Toulon gap.
Practical
Capitainerie open all year. Water and electricity on every pontoon, diesel at the fuel berth. Pontoon gates are coded and a watchman is on duty at night. Toilets and showers ashore are in portable container units, clean but small. Chandlery and sailmakers along quai Cronstadt. All city shops and food markets within 300 m, with the Centre Mayol shopping centre and its Carrefour a few minutes' walk away.
Ashore
Cours Lafayette open-air market every morning except Monday, 200 m from the quay. Mont Faron cable car to 584 m gives views over the rade, lower station 2.5 km from the port. Musee national de la Marine on place Monsenergue, at the head of the darse.
History
The Vieille Darse was dug under Henri IV from 1589 and extended by Vauban from 1680, making Toulon the main Mediterranean base of the French Royal Navy. The port was scuttled by its own fleet in November 1942 to prevent capture by German forces.
Story
On 27 November 1942, 77 French warships including 3 battleships were sunk at their moorings inside the rade of Toulon on orders from Admiral de Laborde.
