Guide
Approach and anchoring
The bottom is sand and mud and holding is uncertain, with boats reported dragging onto the rocks by the harbour office in a NW blow over 30 knots. Room is tight, much of it taken by private and abandoned mooring buoys whose chains and blocks foul anchors, especially south of the diving club quay where anchoring is in principle prohibited. Work in close to the breakwater for mistral cover; the cove stays open to E and NE. Wash from the Toulon shuttles rolls it by day and eases after about 20:00, and lines and old buoy remains lie in 5 m off the north-east beach.
Practical
No services in the cove itself. Land the tender at the concrete quay by the Saint-Mandrier harbour office, where water is available on the quay for around 10 euros an hour. Full marina facilities lie at the port of Saint-Mandrier 0,2 NM SE and Port Pin Rolland 0,7 NM W, with diesel, chandlery and a travel-lift. A small supermarket is close by and the shuttle to central Toulon costs about 2 euros.
Ashore
The village of Saint-Mandrier has restaurants and a Saturday market. The sentier des douaniers runs along the peninsula to the Pointe de Maregau and Cap Cepet, and a small beach lies at the head of the cove. The shuttle to central Toulon crosses the Grande Rade in 20 minutes.
History
The Saint-Mandrier peninsula has hosted the French Navy since the 18th century and the Marine Nationale mechanical school is still active on the south shore.
