Harbour of 550 berths on the Var coast, between Bandol and Toulon, sheltered behind a curved breakwater.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Approach from the south between Ile de Bendor and the Rouveau shoal. Entrance is lit by red and green harbour lights. Beware of the mistral funnelling in from WNW which builds short chop on the approach. Maximum draught 2.8 m at the visitors' pontoon. The charted shallows at the entrance are cleared by a marked channel buoyed with yellow marks, so the way in stays clear despite the low soundings. A marina dinghy meets arriving boats at the entrance and guides them to a berth, and staff take the lines. Call the capitainerie on VHF 9.

Practical

550 berths with water and shore power on pontoons. Fuel berth on the south quay with diesel and petrol. Showers and toilets in the harbour office building. Ice is available to boaters and a laundrette is in the town centre. All shops, bakeries and a daily Provencal market on the quayside. Refuges at Port Mediterranee 0.8 nm SE and Port de la Gorguette 1.2 nm NW.

Ashore

Tuesday morning market on the Cours Louis Blanc, one of the largest in the Var, 50 m from the pontoons. An evening market runs along the quays in summer. Tour Romane, a Romanesque watchtower from the 13th century, overlooks the harbour. Coastal path to the Gorguette creek in 25 minutes walking west. Ile de Bendor, reachable by shuttle from Bandol 2 km east.

History

Former tuna fishing harbour, the village took its current name from the Saint-Nazaire chapel rebuilt in the 16th century and later renamed after Saint Nazaire of Sanary. Between 1933 and 1942 Sanary hosted German-speaking writers fleeing Nazism, including Thomas Mann, Bertolt Brecht and Lion Feuchtwanger.
