Inland mooring on the Canal du Rhône à Sète in the Gard, at the edge of the Petite Camargue.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Access via the Canal du Rhône à Sète from Beaucaire to the east or Aigues-Mortes to the west. The Saint-Gilles lock links the canal to the Petit Rhône. Air draught limited by canal bridges, max draught 1.8 m.
Practical
Small halte with limited space at the town quay, often taken up by long-term and liveaboard boats. Two further VNF haltes lie 1.7 and 1.9 NM south on the canal, and quieter nature pontoons on the branch canal sit about 3 km from town without water or electricity. A swimming pontoon roughly 80 m long behind the Le Boat base takes a boat alongside, most likely free, while the base itself offers water, showers and electricity when space allows. Water on the town quay, shops and bakeries within 400 m.
Ashore
Abbey church of Saint-Gilles 300 m from the quay, Romanesque west front from the 12th century, listed on the UNESCO routes of Santiago de Compostela in France. Chez Tony in the village serves Italian food. Entrance to the Petite Camargue wetlands south of the town.
History
Saint-Gilles was a major medieval pilgrimage town on the Via Tolosana to Santiago de Compostela. The abbey was founded in the 9th century and its sculpted west front is a reference work of Provençal Romanesque art.
