Approach and anchoring

Access by the Canal du Rhône à Sète between Aigues-Mortes and Saint-Gilles. Maximum draught 2 m. No tide, no marked channel. Mast stepping required upstream as the canal is fixed-bridge limited. Approach on engine only, speed capped at 8 km/h on the canal.

Practical

38 berths alongside the quay. Water, electricity and black-water pump-out on the pontoon, included in the price. Modern showers, toilets and a laundry with washing machine and dryer at the capitainerie. Fuel is not available on site. Space is limited, so book about a week ahead. Small grocery, bakery and a handful of restaurants in Gallician village within 300 m.

Ashore

The wine cooperative in Gallician pours the local Costières de Nîmes, and the Café du Port serves traditional cooking at fair prices. Bikes can be borrowed at the harbour office. Maison du Guide de Camargue and Centre du Scamandre wetland reserve at 1 km, with birdwatching paths through the reed beds and coypu along the banks. Aigues-Mortes ramparts reachable by bike along the canal towpath about 11 km west.

History

The Canal du Rhône à Sète was completed in 1829 to link the Rhône delta to the Étang de Thau and avoid the hazardous coastal navigation off the Gulf of Lion.
