Deep-water port of 270 berths on the Côte Vermeille, last French anchorage before the Spanish border.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the east into the natural inlet between two rocky headlands. Shelter is excellent from all directions apart from heavy E and SE swell. Tramontane funnels down from the NW and can reach gale force. Max draught 8.6 m, the deepest of the Pyrénées-Orientales. VHF 9.
Practical
270 berths managed by the regional chamber of commerce. Water, electricity, showers and toilets. The boscos assist with mooring on arrival. Active commercial and fishing port alongside the yachting basin. A Carrefour Express, butcher and greengrocer are within walking distance, with a market on the Place de l'Obélisque and a fish auction in the town, though the office can close as early as 5 pm at weekends. Collioure at 1 NM NW, Banyuls-sur-Mer at 2.5 NM SE.
Ashore
The quayside bakery Les Pains du Quai is well regarded. Obelisk of 1780 on the Quai Pierre Forgas honouring Louis XVI, at 100 m from the pontoons. Redoute Béar fort above the port to the south at 1 km, part of the Vauban defences of Roussillon. Collioure is a 30-minute walk or a short train ride away, along the coastal path of the douaniers, which also leads to the Cap Béar lighthouse.
History
Port-Vendres takes its name from a Roman temple of Venus, Portus Veneris, attested at the site. The town was laid out on a grid by the engineer Charles De Wailly under Louis XVI from 1772, around the obelisk still standing on the main quay.
Story
The painter Charles Rennie Mackintosh lived and worked in Port-Vendres from 1923 to 1927 and produced a series of watercolours of the port and the Pyrenean coast.
