Guide

Approach and anchoring

Approach from the north through the channel between the Ile de Batz and the mainland, or from the east past the Plateau des Duons. Entrance between two breakwaters, available at all tides with no sill. Maximum draught 4 m. Strong tidal streams run in the Canal de l'Ile de Batz, up to 4 knots at springs, so aim to enter near slack water. Call on VHF 9 and the team will meet boats at the entrance in a rib and guide them to a berth. Shelter is good from all directions thanks to the outer breakwater.

Practical

Showers, laundry with coin machines behind the office, waste pump-out, chandlery, an on-site sailmaker and a boatyard with 35 ton travel lift. Around 41 euros a night. A marina bar serves food. Small supermarket at 500 m, bakery and chemist at 300 m, with a free bus also linking the port to the old town.

Ashore

Old town of Roscoff at 1.5 km on foot along the coastal path, with 16th century corsair houses and the Notre-Dame de Croaz-Batz church of 1545. Boat shuttle to the Ile de Batz from the old harbour, 15 minute crossing.

History

Roscoff was a corsair port and centre of the Johnnies trade, Breton onion sellers who crossed to Britain on sailing sloops from the 1820s. Mary Queen of Scots landed at Roscoff in 1548 aged five, betrothed to the Dauphin Francois.

Story

The Johnnies carried strings of pink onions on bicycles through British towns. A museum at Roscoff traces the trade, still kept alive by a small cooperative of growers in the Leon.
