Main harbour of the island of Porquerolles, on the northern shore, inside the Port-Cros national park, off Hyeres.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the north across the Petite Passe or the Grande Passe between the island and the mainland. Entrance between two stone jetties marked by red and green lights. Maximum draught 3,5 m. Mooring inside the national park is regulated and buoy fields cover most of the northern coves. Berthing is often stern-to on pendille lines at the visitor quay and assistance is not always on hand, the lines run well forward so come in slowly. Boats on the harbour mooring blocks are very well protected in a strong easterly. VHF channel 9.
Practical
770 berths managed by the municipal harbour office of Hyères. Booking from a distance is unreliable, in season boats get a place by arriving early and calling VHF 9, and berths fill by late afternoon. Pontoon F bis at the entrance is free during the day. Fuel berth with diesel, water and electricity on pontoons, showers and laundry. Reckon around 50 euros a night without water or electricity for a boat of about 13 m. Yacht Service handles engine and generator repairs. Bakery, grocery, pharmacy and restaurants on the village square 150 m away.
Ashore
Place d'Armes and its plane trees at 150 m, heart of the village built by the French state in the 1820s. Plage de la Courtade sandy beach at 1 km on foot. Fort Sainte-Agathe and its exhibition on the island history at 500 m. Bicycle rental at the port for the 54 km of marked tracks across the island.
History
The island was bought by the French state in 1971 to create the core of the Port-Cros national park. The former agricultural estate of the Fournier family, including the Plage de Notre-Dame vineyards, is now managed by the Conservatoire du Littoral.
