Anchorage off the Pointe d'Agnello at the northern tip of Cap Corse, close to the lighthouse of the Île de la Giraglia.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the south after rounding the point. The Giraglia islet lies 1 nm to the north with a 60 m tall lighthouse, a major landfall mark between Corsica and the Italian coast. Strong currents run around the cape, up to 2 knots on springs; wind against current builds a short steep sea.
Practical
Sand in the centre with good holding, around 5 metres, and rock round the edges; the brown patches are sand rather than weed. Shelter from SE, S and SW, fully exposed to the north and the libeccio from the west, and swell wrapping round the cape can make it roll even when the wind is off the land. Barcaggio 1 nm west and Macinaggio 3.3 nm southeast are the two refuges of the cape.
Ashore
Barcaggio is a hamlet with a handful of houses and a beach grazed by free-roaming cows from the Agriates. The sentier des douaniers coastal path runs from Barcaggio to Macinaggio in around 4 hours, through the Capandula nature reserve of 1 860 hectares acquired by the Conservatoire du Littoral. Landing at the head of the cove gives access to the path and up to the Agnello watchtower.
