Approach and anchoring

Approach from the N between Cap Corse and the Giraglia, watching the strong tidal stream and the libeccio chop that builds from the W. The bottom is a patchwork of sand, rock and posidonia, so pick a clear sand patch: the marine park patrol moves boats off the seagrass. Holding is good on sand in 2.5 to 5 metres. For shelter in westerlies, work in close to the harbour breakwater where the water shoals. Shelter from W and E, and from S through SE. Exposed to N and NE.

Practical

Forain anchorage with a water point ashore at Barcaggio, no shops. The small harbour of Barcaggio takes dinghies only, being too shallow for a keeled boat. A baker's van calls around 10am in season, and the village has two or three restaurants and a snack kiosk. Centuri is 3.5 nm to the SW with a small fishing port and more restaurants.

Ashore

Tour d'Agnello, a 16th century Genoese tower, stands on the headland east of Barcaggio. The sentier des douaniers runs along the Cap Corse coast from Macinaggio to Centuri through the Site classé de la pointe du Cap Corse.

History

The Giraglia lighthouse, on the islet 1 nm offshore, was built in 1848 and marks the northern tip of Corsica for vessels transiting between the Ligurian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
