Approach and anchoring

Open approach from the south, but the anchorage sits behind a sandbar off the channel entrance that shifts with the current, so give the cardinal mark a wide berth and enter by day watching the depth. Anchor on sand and mud in 3 to 5 metres, holding is good, and boats are exposed to the wind but sheltered from the sea behind the bank. Best avoided when the N wind tops 10 to 15 knots. Busy and noisy by day, calm at night. Shift to Port Camargue 0.6 NM NE if the mistral sets in.

Practical

Port Camargue marina 0.6 NM NE, one of the largest marinas on the French Mediterranean with around 5 000 berths, fuel berth, haul-out and full services. Le Grau du Roi fishing port 1.9 NM NE for shops and restaurants.

Ashore

Plage Sud sand beach runs along the anchorage with lifeguarded sections in summer. A small Spar and a few restaurants sit ashore, and the sandbar itself gives a good walk for shells after a southerly blow. Phare de l'Espiguette and its dune system, classed Natura 2000, extends 7 km west of the anchorage. Le Seaquarium in Le Grau du Roi holds sharks and Mediterranean species. Camargue Regional Nature Park north of Le Grau du Roi, with flamingos at the Marais du Vigueirat.
