Approach and anchoring

Straight open coast between Sète and the Palavas lido. Approach on soundings over a gently shelving, coarse sand bottom, anchoring about 500 m off in around 4 metres. Holding is generally good, though the coarse sand can let an anchor skid, so dig it in well. A residual swell sets along this shore almost constantly, rolling even in light winds or a flat forecast, and the marin from SE builds it fast; the tramontane from NW is an offshore wind and leaves the anchorage calm. Fishing floats and traps lie off the beach, so take care approaching at night. Stay at least 300 m from the surf line.

Practical

Open anchorage on sand, no services. Port de Frontignan-Plage 0.3 nm NW at the mouth of the Rhône canal for shelter, water and fuel. Town port of Frontignan 1.2 nm NW inside the canal.

Ashore

Frontignan-Plage resort immediately north with cafés, shops and a train halt on the Sète-Montpellier line. Vineyards of the Muscat de Frontignan appellation reach the back of the town, several cellars open for tastings within 2 km.

History

Muscat de Frontignan is a sweet wine produced from the Muscat blanc à petits grains grape with an appellation recognised since 1936. The ancient port on the Rhône canal shipped the wine to northern Europe from the 18th century onwards.
