Harbour of 192 berths on the north shore of the Étang de Thau, Hérault.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Access from the Mediterranean via the Sète canal and the étang; the Sète bridges work VHF 9. Inside the lagoon, steer for the Mèze buoyed channel on the north shore. Shallow approach, maximum draught 2 m, with only about 1.6 m at the reception quay. A submerged quay edge of about 40 cm makes a gangway useful when going alongside. Anchoring is possible off the harbour in about 3.2 m. Watch for oyster and mussel tables staked across the lagoon.
Practical
192 berths with water and electricity. There is no VHF watch; call the harbour office by phone, which is not always answered, and leave a message. Berthing is around 57 euros a night for a 13.5 m boat. Showers and sanitary facilities are dated. Shops, bakeries and fishmongers in the village within 300 m. Thursday morning market on place des Tonneliers.
Ashore
Oyster and mussel tasting cabanes along the quai de Lattre de Tassigny, producers directly on the lagoon shore. Musée-parc des Dinosaures et de la Préhistoire at 2 km, built on a Lower Cretaceous dinosaur egg site. Voie verte du Lido cycling route links Mèze to Sète along the étang. Restaurants line the harbour, among them l'Abri Côtier on the quay.
History
Mèze is documented as a Gallo-Roman settlement called Mesua. The Étang de Thau has produced shellfish since antiquity, and the industrial oyster beds of Bouzigues and Mèze took shape in the late 19th century after the 1875 phylloxera crisis pushed coastal communities away from vineyards.
