Guide

Approach and anchoring

Access through the main port channel of Les Sables-d'Olonne, between the Grande Jetée and the jetée Saint-Nicolas, both with lit heads. The channel is deep and available at all tides, shared with fishing boats and ferries. Port Olona lies at the back of the commercial harbour, reached via a final buoyed channel. VHF 9.

Practical

1400 berths, fuel berth with diesel and petrol. Arrivals berth first at the reception pontoon on the NE side just before the fuel pontoon, check in at the office, then find their own berth and phone the office to switch on the water and electricity; allow around 45 minutes and expect a wait if several boats arrive together. New sanitary blocks with showers and laundry are excellent but a long walk from the far pontoons, and the refurbished shower floors are slippery when wet. Boatyard with travel lift, chandleries and sailmakers on site. A large Super U and a Leclerc are within walking distance, and bread can be delivered to the boat if ordered the day before. Town centre and market 1 km from the pontoons.

Ashore

Remblai seafront and Grande Plage run along the south side of the channel, 15 minutes on foot. Departure pontoon and monument of the Vendée Globe on the quai des Croisades, next to the marina. Fishing harbour and daily auction on the opposite quay.

History

The Vendée Globe, a non-stop single-handed round-the-world yacht race without assistance, has started and finished at Les Sables-d'Olonne every four years since 1989.
