Purpose-built marina of 640 berths on the Vendee coast, south of Les Sables-d'Olonne, at the edge of Talmont-Saint-Hilaire.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Approach from the SW with the Roches du Bouc shoal to starboard. Entrance channel dredged to about 2.3 m, narrow between two rock breakwaters and lit by red and green sector lights, and with 2.2 m draught it is best entered near high water. In rough weather hold the 40 degree line in from the landing buoy, as rocky plateaus on either side break the swell and make the entrance dangerous. The channel silts up and is swept periodically. In strong SW winds a swell runs across the entrance. VHF 9.

Practical

640 berths on floating pontoons with water and shore power, and help on the lines. The marina is under major reconstruction, with a new office, showers and laundry, though the shower layout is cramped and keeps little dry. Fuel berth with diesel and petrol at the harbour entrance. The old marina shop has been demolished and its replacement is not due until 2027, so provisioning now means a bike ride to a Lidl and Super U, or a 15 minute walk to the fish market, and there are no bars or restaurants in the marina for the moment; a small Uship remains. Bins are a long way from the berths. Free bikes for two hours and a free shuttle bus to Talmont. Jard-sur-Mer 4.5 nm SE and Quai Garnier at Les Sables-d'Olonne 5.8 nm NW as refuges.

Ashore

Beach of Veillon 1.5 km NW on foot along the coastal path, known for Jurassic dinosaur footprints visible at low water. Chateau de Talmont, a fortress built by Richard the Lionheart in the 12th century, in Talmont-Saint-Hilaire 4 km inland. Golf course of 18 holes adjoining the harbour. Restaurant Le Vintage a two minute walk from the pontoons.

History

The harbour was dug out of the cliff and commissioned in 1985 as part of the coastal tourism programme of the Vendee department. It is one of the few French marinas entirely built from scratch on a previously roadless stretch of coast.
