Guide
Approach and anchoring
Shallow approach over a shifting sand bar at the mouth of the Petit Rhône. Depths change with river outflow and storms. Sound in with care, no lower than half-tide. Strong outflowing current after rainy periods on the Rhône catchment. Holding is good on sand in about 4 metres, but the spot turns rolly with any southerly or when afternoon thermals raise a swell.
Practical
No services. Mostly a daytime stop, though it can be held overnight in settled weather with the wind off the land. Port Camargue, the largest marina in Europe with 5,000 berths, lies 5.1 nm NW. Le Grau-du-Roi fishing and leisure harbour 5.6 nm NW, accessible via the Grau-du-Roi channel.
Ashore
The anchorage borders the Camargue regional nature park. Birdlife includes pink flamingos, herons and avocets on the nearby lagoons. Marshes lie just behind the beach, so mosquitoes come out in force at dusk. Horseback riding and Camargue bull ranches along the coastal plain. Nearest village is Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer 8 km to the east by road.
