Guide

Approach and anchoring

The bar at the mouth of the Laïta is shifting and dries in places, so enter within 2 hours of high water, with a maximum draught of about 2 m. The buoyage moves from year to year, so ask before going in. Help through the pass can be arranged by phone or VHF 9, though the channel is not always manned. Once inside, the estuary shelters from every direction, and shallow-draught boats can carry on up the Laïta to Quimperlé. VHF 9.

Practical

Water ashore and a launching ramp, but no fuel. Of the 250 moorings managed seasonally between the Guidel and Clohars-Carnoët banks, about 20 are kept for visitors, and the harbour office also acts as a tourist-information point. Nearest harbour shelter at Guidel 0.1 NM east, Doëlan 3.1 NM west along the coast.

Ashore

The painter Paul Gauguin stayed at Le Pouldu in 1889 and 1890, in the Buvette de la Plage run by Marie Henry. The Maison Marie Henry now presents a reconstruction of the dining room decorated by Gauguin, Meyer de Haan, Sérusier and Filiger. Beach of Le Pouldu at 400 m from the landing. GR34 coastal footpath crosses the estuary.

History

Le Pouldu was the second Pont-Aven school centre after Gauguin moved there to escape the crowds of Pont-Aven. The group worked on the walls of the Buvette between October 1889 and November 1890.
