Drying town harbour of 500 berths at the end of a narrow tidal ria on the Guérande peninsula, where visitors take the ground on soft mud or lie on buoys in the pool, with an active fishing fleet and a bottlenose dolphin research station on the quay.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach through the Grand Trait channel between the Plateau du Four lighthouse to the west and the Pointe du Croisic to the east. Enter the ria following the buoyed channel; the current runs hard, 3 to 4 knots on the ebb and 5 to 6 on big coefficients, so a well-powered dinghy is needed to stay independent. Visitor berths dry alongside the Chambre des Vases pontoon by the harbour office, or lie on buoys in the pool where draught allows; deeper-draught boats moor at the entrance jetty, which takes the NW swell and passing wash. Staff help pick up the buoy. VHF 9.
Practical
Three inner basins. Water and electricity on the pontoons, a second lead is handy. Showers cost 2 euros and sit a fifteen minute walk away at the harbour office, dated but hot. Nightly rates run about 16 to 25 euros. No fuel berth on site, jerrican from the Intermarché 800 m off or diesel at La Turballe. Supermarket, bakery and fish market on the quay within 200 m. Landing by dinghy is awkward at low water when the mud empties, so use the pier at the end of the port.
Ashore
Océarium du Croisic, a private aquarium with 4 million litres of tanks, at 400 m on the western quay. Sentier des douaniers GR 34 from the port along the granite coast of the Côte Sauvage. Guérande walled salt town and its salt marshes at 9 km to the north-east. For eating out, Le Bistrot de la Poissonnerie and the restaurant Ty Mad are well regarded, and the Côte et Mer shop stocks Breton produce.
History
Le Croisic was a cod-fishing and salt-trading port from the 15th century. The Hôtel d'Aiguillon on the Quai Lénigo dates from the 17th century, and the Mont-Lénigo mounds along the harbour are ballast heaps from returning Newfoundland cod schooners.
