Anchorage on the north side of Île du Pilier, a small rocky island off Noirmoutier, 2.7 NM west of L'Herbaudière.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the east in daylight, watching for rocks around the island and its offshore reef. Mixed sand and rock bottom, so pick a sand patch for holding. Anchors foul easily in the rock, so buoy the anchor and check the set. The low island gives little shelter once it blows and the rocky shore offers no refuge for a boat that drags, so treat it as a fair-weather stop only. Sheltered from S and W, open to N, NE and E.
Practical
No facilities on the island. L'Herbaudière harbour 2.7 NM east and Port de Morin 4.5 NM south-east both offer berths, water and fuel.
History
Île du Pilier carries a lighthouse first lit in 1829 to mark the north-western tip of Noirmoutier and the approaches to the Bay of Bourgneuf.
