Guide
Approach and anchoring
The Gulf of Morbihan streams reach 8 knots at springs through the Grands Courreaux off Port-Blanc, though around the island the ebb runs closer to 2 knots, so time arrival near slack water. Pick up a visitor buoy rather than anchor, as the weed holds poorly; the rings sit low and are awkward to gaff, and the southernmost buoy leaves only about 1.4 m at low water. Shelter is limited to NW, W and SW, the island's trees taking the west wind.
Practical
Buoys only, no services ashore on the island. Larmor-Baden at 0.8 nm NW has water, a small supermarket and a boulangerie. Kerners-Bilouris at 0.8 nm SE gives an alternative landing with a slipway.
Ashore
The island lies inside the Natura 2000 zone of the Gulf of Morbihan and is private, so landing is limited to the fine sand of the foreshore with no access inland. The passenger shuttle from Port-Blanc to the Île-aux-Moines runs every 30 minutes in season, 1.5 nm north, for the 7 km coastal footpath around the Île-aux-Moines.
History
The Gulf of Morbihan holds one of the densest concentrations of Neolithic monuments in Europe, including the Cairn of Gavrinis 2 nm west, dated to around 4000 BC.
