Anchorage off Cayo Aurora, the western of the three Cayos de Caña Gorda off Guánica, nicknamed Gilligan's Island since the 1970s after the television series.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Sand and mud bottom. Sheltered from NW through N and E to S, open to the west and south-west. The key lies 600 m off Punta Jacinto. Isla Ballena, the eastern key, is separated from the shore by a channel only 20 m wide.
Practical
No facilities on the mangrove-covered keys. Passenger boats have run out from Punta Jacinto, but a tour operator reported the key closed to visitors after the 2020 earthquakes damaged its landing: check before going ashore. Copamarina beach is 0.5 NM north-west.
Ashore
The shore behind the keys belongs to the Guánica dry forest, the largest remaining tract of tropical dry coastal forest, a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1981.
