Guide
Approach and anchoring
Wide open bay, approach clear of dangers by day. The bottom is largely rock and posidonia with only scattered sand, and old concrete blocks and chains litter the seabed, some with lines floating a few metres down that can foul an anchor, so drop on clear sand only. A field of local buoys lies off the beach, but they sit close together on shallow ground and suit mainly small craft; only a couple take boats over 10 m, so call VHF 9 or the office to be assigned one. The buoys are often not laid until well into the season, when submerged buoys just below the surface threaten propellers. Exposed to W and NW swell, rolly in a SW, shelter poor in Libeccio.
Practical
Village quay at Galéria hamlet 0.1 nm west with water. The first night on a buoy is generally free; call the office to confirm which one to take. A Spar supermarket, restaurants, a bakery and a diving club are in the village. Port de Girolata 4.2 nm south, accessible only by sea or on foot.
Ashore
La Cabane du Pêcheur, about 3 minutes by dinghy, serves food non-stop through the day and takes bookings ahead. Sentier de la Mer from Galéria to Girolata along the coast of the réserve naturelle de Scandola, inscribed UNESCO World Heritage since 1983. The Fango valley behind the bay is a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1977 for its Laricio pine forest, reached in July and August by a free municipal shuttle from the port.
History
Scandola, adjacent to the bay, became France's first combined land and sea nature reserve in 1975.
