Marina of 960 berths at the mouth of the Boudigau channel in the Landes, the only sheltered port on the 100 km sand coast between the Adour and the Arcachon inlet.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Entrance between two jetties aligned east to west, with the Estacade timber pier on the north side. The bar breaks in westerly swell above 2 m and on the ebb, so cross only in the last two hours of the rising tide near high water, as more than about two hours either side of HW a boat risks grounding and being set onto the breakwaters. Depths at the entrance are often less than charted, as little as 1.3 m at low water, and some pontoons carry less than the charted dredged depth, with a maximum draught of about 2.1 m near high water. Gouf de Capbreton, a submarine canyon reaching 3 000 m, starts within 300 m of the entrance and produces confused seas. VHF 9.

Practical

960 berths, water and electricity. Fuel station on the pontoon for diesel and petrol. Boatyard and 35 t travel lift at the north basin. The harbour office works 8 to 12 and 14 to 18 and is not on the VHF outside those hours. The visitor shower and toilet block is old and widely thought poorly kept, with a shower token free from the office. Reckon on about 49 euros a night for a 13 m boat, with the fourth night free. Supermarkets within 500 m in town.

Ashore

Beach of the Estacade fronts the port to the north, sheltered from the ebb current. Soorts-Hossegor is a short walk away with bars, boutiques and a Carrefour Express and Spar for provisioning. La Vélodyssée EV1 cycle route passes through the port on its 1 200 km from Roscoff to Hendaye. Market on Tuesday and Saturday morning at the Halles de Capbreton, 400 m from the marina.

History

Capbreton was a whaling port in the 14th and 15th centuries, mentioned in the 1341 charters of the Vicomté de Maremne. The Estacade timber pier was rebuilt in 1858 under Napoleon III to stabilise the channel.
