Approach and anchoring

Approach from open sea, entrance between two piers with red and green lights. Max draught 3 m. Watch for the tramontane blowing hard from the NW. The new finger pontoons hold in a 25 to 35 knot tramontane, though berths roll with an incoming swell. Mooring buoys are also available and booked through the harbour office. Call the harbour office on VHF 9 before entering.

Practical

363 berths including visitor pontoons. Water, electricity, diesel, toilets and showers at the capitainerie. Village centre and shops within 200 m. There is no chandlery in the immediate area. Train station 300 m from the marina.

Ashore

Laboratoire Arago and Biodiversarium aquarium on the south quay, linked to Sorbonne University marine research. El Nautic by the harbour serves tapas. Coastal path to Cap Béar lighthouse 3 km north. Vineyards of the Banyuls AOC wine cooperative tastings at Cellier des Templiers, 400 m from the port.

History

Banyuls gave its name to a fortified sweet wine granted AOC status in 1936. The village is also the birthplace of sculptor Aristide Maillol, whose tomb and museum sit 4 km inland at the Mas Maillol.
