Major marina of 1 600 berths in the bay of Bandol, between the Ile de Bendor and the town of Sanary-sur-Mer, on the Var coast.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the south, leaving the Ile de Bendor to port. Entrance between the Digue du Large and the Jetee du Casino, marked by red and green lights. Maximum draught 3 m, deepest berths on the Quai d'Honneur. Well sheltered from the mistral by the hills to the north, exposed to a south-easterly swell through the entrance. VHF 9. Berthing assistance is usually on hand and copes well in strong wind, though not always available late in the day.
Practical
1 600 berths with a dedicated visitor quay. Fuel berth with diesel and petrol open year-round. Water, power and Wi-Fi on the pontoons. The harbour is under a major redevelopment and does not currently take multihulls, with catamaran berths planned in the future scheme. The harbour office is a long walk from the visitor quay. The sanitary block nearest the office is clean, but those farthest out are old and can smell of sewage. Chandlery and small boatyard on the eastern side of the basin.
Ashore
Town centre opens directly onto the quays with all shops, restaurants and a daily market on place de la Liberté. The Bendor island shuttle runs from the port, a short crossing to the 7 hectare island developed by Paul Ricard in the 1950s, though access is now tied to a booking at one of the island restaurants. Bandol AOC vineyards rise behind the town toward Le Castellet, about 8 km inland.
History
Bandol was a wine-shipping port from the 17th century, exporting barrels of local red to the American colonies and later to northern Europe. The modern marina was enlarged in the 1970s to its current size.
