Lake Ontario south shore: Niagara to Sackets Harbor
14 places · Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands
More than 120 miles of New York shore where every harbour is a river mouth or a bay behind jetties. Youngstown at the mouth of the Niagara, Wilson, Olcott, Point Breeze on Oak Orchard Creek, Rochester on the Genesee and Irondequoit Bay, Pultneyville, Sodus Bay, Fair Haven in Little Sodus Bay, then Oswego, a harbour of refuge and the start of the canal to the Erie Canal. Then Henderson Harbor, Sackets Harbor, a naval base in the War of 1812, and the large, well-sheltered Chaumont Bay. Westerly gales blow down the whole lake: Mexico Bay, north of Oswego, was known as the graveyard of Lake Ontario.
