Lake Superior: the Apostle Islands, Duluth and Isle Royale

The western end of the largest Great Lake, 406 metres deep and cold: the water barely tops 15 degrees in late summer. Bayfield and Madeline Island are the base for the twenty or so Apostle Islands, with public docks on twelve of them but no fuel or repairs inside the park. Port Superior and Ashland in Chequamegon Bay, Cornucopia and Port Wing on the way to Duluth, Minnesota's North Shore by Knife River and Silver Bay, then Grand Portage, 22 miles from Isle Royale, where the national park asks boaters to get their permit in advance in Houghton.
