Town-owned marina on the Wachapreague Channel, on the seaside of Virginia's Eastern Shore, with over 100 slips behind the barrier islands.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached from the Atlantic by the Wachapreague Channel, which winds through the marsh from open water between Cedar and Parramore Islands. The channel carries shifting shoals, so a rising tide is advised. No protected deep-water approach to the inlet itself.
Practical
Over 100 slips with water, electricity and Wi-Fi. Fuel berth supplies petrol and diesel. The marina runs inshore and offshore fishing charters and a drop-off service to the barrier islands. Boat ramps adjoin the marina.
History
A wharf was built here in 1872 to ship produce north, and a steamboat link to New York City opened in 1884. The Wachapreague Hotel of 1902 drew hunters and anglers and gave work to the local charter fleet.
Story
Wachapreague calls itself the Flounder Capital of the World, with flounder taken from the channels as early as late March.
