Approach and anchoring
Spoil islands line the Intracoastal Waterway through the Indian River Lagoon and were built from dredge spoil during the cutting of the waterway in the 1950s. Fort Pierce Inlet, 0.6 nm E, gives direct access to the Atlantic.
Practical
Anchoring on sand. Ft Pierce Inlet Marina lies 0.6 nm E and Harbour Isle Marina 0.6 nm SE. The state-owned spoil islands are open for landing by tender, with camping on a first-come basis at no charge.
Ashore
The anchorage sits within the Indian River-Vero Beach to Fort Pierce Aquatic Preserve. The spoil islands have grown into wildlife habitat and are used for picnicking and birdwatching.
