Guide
Approach and anchoring
Freshwater lake created by the Grangent dam, commissioned in 1957. The water body is closed to through-navigation, access by road and launching ramp only. Draft limited by the reservoir profile and variable with the hydroelectric levels operated by EDF. No tidal constraint.
Practical
Around 400 berths for light sailing boats, motor boats and windsurfers managed by the city of Saint-Étienne. Slipway, crane, water and electricity on pontoons. Fuel is not available on site. Shops and restaurants in the medieval village of Saint-Victor above the harbour.
Ashore
Medieval village of Saint-Victor-sur-Loire with the remains of a 13th-century castle overlooking the lake. Footpath circles the gorges de la Loire, with the Île de Grangent and its chapel visible from the north bank. Gorges de la Loire nature reserve with protected ornithological areas on the east shore.
History
The Grangent dam was built between 1955 and 1957 for hydroelectric generation, flooding the Loire gorges and isolating the medieval village of Saint-Victor on a promontory. The sailing base was opened by the city of Saint-Étienne shortly after.
