Approach and anchoring

Accessed by the Canal de Saint-Quentin, Freycinet gauge. Locks operated by VNF. The quays lie on the east bank just south of the Cambrai marina. No tidal constraints.

Practical

Free public moorings along the quay, no dedicated services. Water and electricity available at the Port de Plaisance de Cambrai 200 metres north. All shops in Cambrai town centre within 1 km.

Ashore

Cambrai town centre at 1 km, with the Saint-Sepulcre cathedral rebuilt in the 18th century and the belfry of the former Saint-Martin church, a UNESCO listed belfry of Belgium and France. Musee de Cambrai with Matisse drawings at 1.2 km. Tank memorial of the 1917 battle of Cambrai 4 km south at Flesquieres.

History

Cambrai, a medieval archbishopric, became one of the main textile towns of northern France under the Ancien Regime. The canal reached the town in 1810 and the quays were developed for the coal and grain trade in the 19th century. The town was heavily destroyed during the November 1917 battle, the first large scale tank engagement in history.
