Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached from the Saône via the lower Ognon, navigable only in its final reach. Very shallow draught river, suited to canoes, kayaks and small motor craft. No lock at Valay itself.
Practical
Base nautique Port Saint-Pierre with two moorings, electric boat and canoe rental on the river. Village bakery and grocery within 500 m of the landing.
Ashore
The vestiges of the Valay forges, a nineteenth century ironworks listed as a historic monument, stand 800 m from the river: blast furnace hall, forge master's house and workers' housing. Two Gallo-Roman villa sites have been excavated on the commune. The Ognon valley cycle route passes through the village.
