Approach and anchoring

Reached from the sea by the Adour estuary at the Bayonne bar, then up the Adour to the confluence at Pey Saint-Vincent and up the Gaves Réunis to Peyrehorade. Tidal influence reaches the port, max draught 3 metres. Strong ebb after heavy rain on the Pyrenees watershed. Watch for driftwood and navigate near high water for the last section.

Practical

Pontoons along the left bank at the town quay, water and electricity. Capitainerie open in season. All shops in Peyrehorade within 200 m, supermarket 600 m west. Nearest fuel by road.

Ashore

Bastide town of Peyrehorade centred on place Aristide Briand, with a 16th century château, the Château d'Aspremont, on the hillside above the port. Abbey of Sorde-l'Abbaye, Romanesque, UNESCO World Heritage as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France, 6 km south-east. Vineyards of the Tursan AOC area around 20 km east.

History

Peyrehorade developed as a trading post on the Gaves thanks to the Romans and then Cistercian monks. The reunion of the Gave de Pau and Gave d'Oloron made it a transhipment point for Pyrenean goods down to Bayonne, active until the 19th century.
