Approach and anchoring
Reached via the Canal de Briare from Briare to the south or via the Canal du Loing junction to the north. Freycinet gauge throughout. Maximum draught 1.2 metres. Locks managed by VNF, subdivision based at 14 boulevard des Belles Manières in Montargis.
Practical
Around 50 berths, water and electricity on the pontoons via the standard VNF token system common to the Centre canals. Town centre of Montargis within walking distance for supermarkets, bakeries and the SNCF station on the Paris Bercy to Nevers line.
Ashore
Historic centre of Montargis at roughly 600 metres with its medieval streets crossed by 130 small bridges over the Loing branches. Musée Girodet 800 metres from the port. Forêt domaniale de Montargis for walking about 2 km east.
History
The Canal de Briare, opened in 1642, was the first summit-level canal built in Europe and linked the Loire at Briare to the Loing at Montargis, a length of 57 km with 36 locks. It remained the main route between the Loire basin and the Seine until the nineteenth century.
