Guide
Approach and anchoring
Anchoring and mooring forbidden under the regulations of the Parc Marin International des Bouches de Bonifacio. Reserved for swimming and non-motorised craft along the beach. Approach the area under sail only to pass, staying offshore of the marked buoy line.
Practical
Shelter in the Port de Plaisance de Bonifacio 0.5 NM east, reached via the marked channel at the foot of the Bastion de l'Étendard. Commercial marina 0.3 NM SE.
Ashore
Plage de l'Arinella lies directly below the Bosco cliffs. Bonifacio Haute Ville, the clifftop medieval citadel with the Bastion de l'Étendard and the Escalier du Roi d'Aragon, is 500 m from the port along the steep path.
History
Bonifacio was founded around 828 by Count Boniface of Tuscany. The citadel passed to Genoa in 1187 and withstood the siege of Alfonso V of Aragon in 1420, an episode linked to the King of Aragon's staircase carved into the cliff.
