Approach and anchoring
Enter via the Canal de la Marne au Rhin ouest. Freycinet gauge with locks of 38.5 by 5.2 m, automated by VNF. Maximum draught 1.8 m, air draught 3.5 m. Pagny-sur-Meuse is on the reach between the Foug lock staircase to the east and the Demange-aux-Eaux summit level to the west. Watch for the narrow Foug tunnel 867 m long, one-way traffic.
Practical
Four berths at a simple quay, water tap available. No shore power, no fuel on site. Nearest fuel at the marina of Toul Port de France, 12 km east on the canal. Bakery and small shop in Pagny-sur-Meuse village within 300 m of the quay. SNCF station of Pagny-sur-Meuse on the Paris-Strasbourg line, about 400 m from the port.
Ashore
Marais de Pagny nature reserve, 91 hectares of calcareous fen protected as a Natura 2000 site, entrance 1 km from the port with a marked boardwalk trail. Toul and its Vauban ramparts at 12 km by canal or road. Meuse valley viewpoints at Void-Vacon, 10 km west.
History
The Canal de la Marne au Rhin was opened in 1853 to link Vitry-le-Francois on the Marne to Strasbourg on the Rhine across the Lorraine plateau. The western section through Pagny-sur-Meuse includes the Mauvages summit tunnel, 4 877 m, once worked by electric haulage from an overhead cable.
