Northwest Seafood Charleston
- Type
- Harbour
Seafood processing dock in Charleston, Oregon, on the Coos Bay waterfront eight miles from Coos Bay city, just inside the bay entrance.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Entry from the Pacific is over the Coos Bay bar between the North and South jetties, completed in 1929. The bar can be crossed at any time except in extreme weather. A federal channel of about 17 feet runs roughly 0.6 mile south from the junction to the Charleston boat basin.
Practical
A working seafood dock rather than a leisure berth. The neighbouring Charleston Marina Complex, owned by the Port of Coos Bay, has over 400 moorage slips, a six-lane launch ramp, restrooms, showers, fish cleaning stations and an ice plant.
Ashore
Charleston is the third largest fishing hub in Oregon and home port to a commercial fleet of trawlers, crabbers and charter boats. Chuck's Seafood market, trading since 1953, is in the village.
