Guide

Approach and anchoring

On the Loire river, accessible to shallow-draught craft only. The Loire is not maintained for commercial navigation here and sandbanks shift with floods and drought. Navigate between the red and green markers where present, and consult local river guides before attempting passage outside the rising-water season from November to May.

Practical

Small town quay with visitor pontoon and water point. Bakery, grocery and café within 300 m in the village. Bouchemaine marina 10.5 NM east provides the nearest fully serviced stop toward Angers.

Ashore

Écomusée des Mariniers de Loire, housed in a former 19th century stone building, about 200 m from the quay, covering the history of flat-bottomed Loire river trade. Église Saint-Symphorien on its rocky spur overlooking the river, visible from the port. Loire à Vélo cycle route passes through the village, connecting Nantes and Angers along the river.

History

Montjean was a river port active from the Middle Ages, specialising in coal shipment from the nearby Basse-Loire coalfield and lime burning in the 19th century. The last commercial gabares left the port in the early 20th century.
