Approach and anchoring

Entered from the Canal de Garonne, bief between Meilhan lock and Fontet lock. Guaranteed draught 1.80 m, bridge clearance 3.50 m on the Freycinet gauge. Maximum vessel 38.50 m by 5.05 m. No lock at the port itself, speed limited to 6 km/h.

Practical

Around 25 berths on pontoons, water and electricity on the quay, sanitary block, waste disposal. Bread and small grocery at the village 300 m up the hill, Intermarche at Castets-en-Dorthe 4 km west by road.

Ashore

Canal de Garonne towpath, part of the Canal des Deux Mers velo route between Bordeaux and Sete, suitable for walking and cycling. Viewpoint over the Garonne valley from the Tertre de Meilhan at 400 m from the port, with orientation table. Castets-en-Dorthe and the junction with the tidal Garonne at 4 km, marking the end of the canal.

History

The Canal de Garonne, known originally as the Canal lateral a la Garonne, was built between 1838 and 1856 to bypass the unnavigable middle Garonne. It extends the Canal du Midi to Bordeaux, completing the Canal des Deux Mers between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
