Approach and anchoring
Access via the Canal latéral à la Garonne, reach between lock 44 of Fourques and lock 43 of Gaujac. Freycinet gauge, maximum length 38,5 m, beam 5,05 m, draught 1,80 m. Locks operated automatically with a remote control handed out by VNF. Passage under fixed bridges at an air draught of 3,50 m.
Practical
Quay fitted with water and electricity bollards. Rubbish and used oil collection at the base. Bakery and small shop in the village of Fourques at 400 m. Weekly market on Wednesday morning at Meilhan-sur-Garonne, around 10 km by the canal.
Ashore
The Canal des Deux Mers cycle route runs along the towpath, allowing a ride to Meilhan-sur-Garonne in about an hour by bike. Church of Saint-Julien de Fourques, thirteenth century with later alterations, at 350 m. Chateau de Buzet and its wine cooperative at 20 km by road, Buzet AOC reds and rosés.
History
The Canal latéral à la Garonne was built between 1839 and 1856 to bypass the unnavigable stretches of the Garonne between Toulouse and Castets-en-Dorthe, where it meets the tidal river. It forms the western half of the Canal des Deux Mers, classified as a major heritage waterway by VNF.
