Approach and anchoring
Reached through the Keweenaw Waterway, a sheltered run of natural rivers, lakes and dredged channels linking both ends to Lake Superior. The Portage Lake Lift Bridge crosses the waterway near downtown Houghton; tall-masted boats hail the bridge operator on VHF 16 for a lift. Houghton County Marina lies 2.5 nautical miles east.
