Mangrove anchorage at the mouth of the Little Shark River, near Cape Sable within Everglades National Park, Florida.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Entered from Ponce de Leon Bay. The approach across Florida Bay is shallow for many miles offshore. Around 6 feet can be carried up the river, with deeper water at anchor. Sand bottom, shelter mainly from the south-east.
Practical
No docks, moorings or facilities. The nearest refuge is Flamingo, 16.6 miles to the south-east. Mobile phones do not work and VHF coverage is poor. Operating within the park requires the Everglades National Park boater certificate.
Ashore
There is no dry land to step onto here, only mangrove. Bottlenose dolphins, manatees and sea turtles are seen in the river, which is also a breeding ground for bull sharks.
