Waterfront town on the west bank of the Swinomish Channel in Skagit County, Washington, between Bellingham and Seattle.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
The Swinomish Channel is an 11-mile waterway linking Padilla Bay with Saratoga Passage. It is dredged on a three-year cycle to 12 feet below mean lower low water. Berths and mooring floats line the waterfront.
Practical
Piers, wharves and mooring floats run along the channel front. A fuel berth is available, and the channel gives access to the wider Puget Sound.
Ashore
A boardwalk follows the channel through the town centre. The Pacific Northwest Quilt and Fiber Arts Museum occupies the Gaches Mansion, a 22-room house of 1891 in the La Conner National Historic District.
History
A trading post was set up on the high ground in the 1860s and bought by John and Louisa Conner, who arrived in 1869. The post office was renamed La Conner after Louisa Conner in 1870, making it the first town in what became Skagit County.
