Guide

Approach and anchoring

Gastineau Channel is a glacial valley some 15 miles long, separating the mainland from Douglas Island. The anchorage holds in rock and mud and is sheltered from the north-east, west, south-west and south. Transient moorage is available at the Harris and Douglas floats downtown if a berth is preferred. Cruise traffic is heavy from May to September.

Practical

Downtown Juneau, within walking distance of Harris Harbor, has grocery stores, restaurants, a post office, a library and public transport. Statter Harbor at Auke Bay lies 8.7 miles north-west, with Funter Bay 15 miles west across the channel.

Story

Gastineau Channel is one of the few places where mountain goats can be spotted from a boat, on the slopes of Mount Juneau and the ridge south of Sheep Creek.
