Approach and anchoring
Approach via the Canal entre Champagne et Bourgogne, formerly Canal de la Marne a la Saone. The canal is Freycinet gauge with locks of 38.5 by 5.2 m. VNF operates the locks automatically by remote control. Air draught 3.5 m, maximum draught 1.8 m. Halt is on the right bank in the village reach, look for the wooden pontoon and halt sign.
Practical
Free halt with a short pontoon for two to three barges. Drinking water tap at the pontoon, no shore power. No fuel, nearest supply is at the Chaumont basin about 8 km south. Bakery and small grocery in Riaucourt village within 400 m of the halt.
Ashore
Voie verte de la Haute-Marne along the canal towpath, open to cyclists and walkers. Chaumont viaduct, a fifty metre high stone railway bridge from 1856, visible 8 km south. Forest of Arc-en-Barrois for walking within 15 km.
History
The Canal entre Champagne et Bourgogne was completed in 1907 to link the Marne at Vitry-le-Francois to the Saone at Maxilly-sur-Saone. It crosses the watershed at the Balesmes tunnel, 4 820 m long, one of the longest canal tunnels in France.
