Port of refuge on the far north coast of California, the only deep-water harbour between San Francisco and Coos Bay in Oregon.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the south-west clear of the Saint George Reef. Inner Boat Basin dredged to 12 feet. Harbour master on VHF channels 9 and 16, Monday to Friday 0700 to 1700.
Practical
Inner Boat Basin with 240 berths from 30 to 70 feet, plus side-tie moorage up to 175 feet. Visitor berths on both sides of H-dock, no rafting up. Diesel and petrol available at the harbour. Town centre at 1 mile.
History
The harbour was struck by the 1964 Alaska earthquake tsunami, which killed eleven people and destroyed much of the waterfront. A further tsunami in July 2025, triggered by the M8.8 Kamchatka earthquake, recorded the highest waves ever observed on the continental United States coast and damaged H-dock.
